Behind the progress of Jakarta, there are several areas that are still beyond the reach of the local government, and Kampung Dao is one of them. That is where I first volunteered. To get to the workshop location, we had to walk through residential areas and along railroad tracks to get to where we were learning. Upon arriving at the Rumah Belajar location, we were greeted cheerfully by our fellow workshop participants. From the start, they were very open to us.
That day, we began the workshop with ice breaking, which turned out to be very popular with our friends. At that moment, they began to feel comfortable communicating with us. There were more than 30 children who participated that day. There, we learned together about aerodynamics—the science of air movement—which had been prepared by the facilitator team.
We were happy to meet children who were very enthusiastic and competitive in the simple games that had been prepared. In addition to learning activities, we also prepared exciting and simple experiments as a medium for them to understand the topics we presented. The experiment was to make a yo-yo. Some of the tools we used for this experiment were cardboard, straws, skewers, and glue.
In making the yo-yo, the children learned the values of togetherness, cooperation, and communication with one another. At the end of the experiment, we concluded by testing their individual skills with the yo-yos they had made. After that, we played another game that also contained important moral values by testing the concentration of our friends. Since it was the fasting month, we concluded the workshop by breaking the fast together.
I was very happy to meet fellow volunteers who were friendly to this community. I felt that they were very open and always made room for new volunteers who wanted to participate. After the workshop, I was happy to see the workshop participants always cheerful. This workshop may seem simple, but it means a lot to them. Therefore, the commitment I made earlier will not fade because education is something that must always be fought for.
